January 2007 Living with a pervasive developmental disorder is very challenging in many ways for most individuals, but a little guidance can make the world of difference for these people. This success story is based upon the life of an individual who has been dually diagnosed (with Autism & Schizophrenia) and has overcome major barriers with perseverance and a little help from the Kerry’s Place Central West Community Services team. Joseph (JoJo) has always shown interest in his community. He has always participated in community activities and is always present at Social group gatherings offered by several agencies providing services to individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities & mental illnesses. He is very enthusiastic and self – motivated to be present at activities within his community and really enjoys the company of others. 18 months ago however, Joseph had some obstacles attributed to his diagnosis that made it very difficult for him to participate in a positive manner. Joseph had some basic life skills challenges accompanied with some mild verbal/physical aggressions. Joseph was introduced to the Peel Crisis Capacity Network and Kerry’s Place Central West Community Services team during this time of turmoil and has continued on a positive path towards success, empowerment and independence ever since. Joseph’s aggressions & behaviours are now very mild because he has learned how to make alternative choices whenever he is overwhelmed with anxiety, he’s secured a part – time job at a restaurant and is in the final stage of securing independent living. Joseph’s ability to transit independently has opened several doors and given him the opportunity to participate within his community. As a team, we are all proud of Joseph for his success. Joseph has, and will continue to inspire other individuals diagnosed with Autism to be patient for success, and to be an active member within their communities. It has been a privilege for the KPAS team to get to know Joseph and watch him achieve his goals. |
