Help us create a recreational complex with indoor and outdoor space for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Many people that we support in this age group enjoy being active. A setting like this would contribute to the overall improvement of social skills, life enjoyment, physical activity and, in some cases, has been proven to decrease feelings of depression and anxiety.

At Kerry’s Place, we want to see a future where all persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder are participating fully in our communities. Each day, we aim to enhance the quality of life for persons with ASD and to empower them! For us, there is a disconnect between what is needed and what is available for adults with ASD in our communities. With these ideas in the forefront of our minds, a project like this is something that we feel is worth implementing.

The purpose of this project would be to create an indoor/ outdoor recreation and leisure space for adults with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). People we support with ASD in this age group, enjoy being active. A setting like this would contribute to the improvement of social skills, life enjoyment, physical activity and, in some cases, has been proven to decrease feelings of depression and anxiety.

We currently have 26 acres of property in Belwood, Ontario. On this property, there is a large, open building that is currently operating as an indoor gym facility. There are a couple of recumbent bikes and treadmills. This building would require some minor renovations, more indoor recreational equipment such as ellipticals, treadmills, yoga balls, yoga mats, etc. The indoor space would also require movable partitions and proper sensory furniture for lounging and leisure. The renovation would also need to lend itself to the creation of two small office spaces to accommodate private consultations. Nothing would be in a fixed place as this would allow for a more versatile use of the space. With an open, indoor space, yoga and other classes could be taught during colder months.

Outdoor space would feature adult outdoor recreation equipment, a track, a wheelchair accessible saltwater pool, a gazebo (or 2) would offer covered space with sensory outdoor beanbags and appropriate outdoor furniture for leisure and relaxation, wheelchair accessible planters would also be available for a sensory gardening experience.

In the Orangeville and Belwood areas, we have a large population of adults with ASD who are supported by Kerry’s Place. Physical activity, outdoor space and a place to feel free and comfortable are crucial when it comes to empowering those with ASD to lead full and rich lives. Unfortunately, there are no facilities like this that would give those with ASD the experience they need.

At Kerry’s Place, our vision is to see a future where all persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder are participating fully in our communities. For us, there is a disconnect between what is needed and what is available for adults with ASD in our communities. Our Mission is to enhance the quality of life for persons with ASD and to empower them and their families, through evidenced-based, innovative and person-directed supports. With these two ideas in mind, a project like this is something that we, at Kerry’s Place Autism Services, feel is worth implementing.
