KERRY’S PLACE IS SO PLEASED TO HAVE RECEIVED A DONATION OF 25 SENSORY LAP QUILTS!
Pass it on Initiative creates touch quilts for people with Dementia and Autism. Founders, Cathy Mathewson and Terry Turner, came to be passionate about the creation of sensory quilts for two very different reasons; Cathy has 3 grandchildren on the spectrum and Terry’s mother has dementia. So, while their reason for getting involved in a project like this is different, they are unified in their desire to positively impact the lives of others.
THEIR MISSION IS TO ASSIST EACH AND EVERY PERSON WHO HAS SIGNIFICANT LIMITATIONS IN COGNITIVE AND ADAPTIVE FUNCTIONS AND ANY FORM OF DEMENTIA BY PROVIDING A STIMULATING OR SOOTHING CREATION FOR THEIR OWN USE AND PLEASURE.
Lap quilts are created out of a wide variety of fabrics with different colors and textures. There is so much visual interest in these quilts and each one is like a mini tapestry—a work of art! Different textures in the fabric include corduroy, fur, leather and suede just to name a few. These textures provide a tactile experience which can be beneficial to someone with Dementia or Autism. Sensory quilts provide something to focus on, both visually and tactilely and this can bring a sense of calm.
CATHY AND TERRY ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR DONATIONS OF FABRIC, VELCRO, BUTTONS AND ANYTHING THAT THEY COULD ADD TO THEIR SENSORY QUILTS.
So, if you have ends of fabric, or even old clothing that’s taking up space at home, Pass it on Initiative can take it and make something beautiful!
