Getting the Message Across: Understanding Receptive and Expressive Communication in Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder
This 2 ½-hour workshop will provide parents, caregivers and professionals supporting persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) information about communication differences in persons with ASD and strategies to support functional communication. The workshop will explore ways persons with ASD receive and express information through spoken language, augmentative communication systems, gestures, and visual supports.
As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will be able to:
- define receptive and expressive communication
- describe the difference between receptive and expressive communication
- identify strategies for improving functional communication
- describe the importance of collaborating with a Speech Language Pathologist
Recommended Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Everyone Learns Differently: Strategies to Bridge the Gap Between Learning and Teaching for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Getting the Message Across: Understanding Receptive and Expressive Communication in Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder will be delivered virtually via Zoom. The Zoom link will be e-mailed by a Kerry’s Place staff two business days before the event start.
To participate, the following is required:
- mobile device, tablet or computer
- internet connection
- speakers and a microphone
- webcam

Time: 9:30am to 12:00pm
Cost: $100 per person
Cancellation Policy:
Cancelled by Kerry’s Place: Kerry’s Place may cancel a program due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances. If this occurs, and the activity cannot be rescheduled, a full refund will be issued with no administrative fee charged.
Cancelled by Supported Person/Family (as applicable): Cancellation must be received at least 7 days before the start of the workshop/training. A full refund, minus a $25.00 administrative fee, will be applied when 7 days’ notice is provided. If 7 days’ notice is not provided, a full refund will only be issued if the vacancy can be filled. Refunds will not be issued for a missed day during a training session.
