CLOSED: It Happens For A Reason: The Meaning Behind Behaviour

In this three-part learning series, parents/caregivers and professionals supporting persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will leave with a foundational understanding about the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) or “why we do what we do”. Participants will build skills around describing behaviour, understanding why it happens and promoting behaviour change.
Participants will become familiar with the science of ABA, what behaviour is and isn’t, how to describe behaviour and data collection in module 1. In module 2, participants will gain further insight into why behaviour happens and how professionals in the field develop strategies to promote behaviour change. In module 3, participants will have an opportunity to examine a case study and apply learned strategies to the real world while collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team.
As a result of participating in this workshop series, participants will be able to:
- describe the elements of an operational definition of behaviour and provide an example
- describe the ABCs of behaviour including setting events
- compare and contrast different methods of data collection
- list the four functions of behaviour with examples
- identify antecedent strategies
- describe the application of function-based consequence strategies
- describe the purpose of behaviour intervention plans
- list various antecedent strategies and environmental modifications to decrease or increase the likelihood of behaviour occurring
- identify functionally equivalent replacement behaviours
- recognize the importance of safety, and utilizing non-violent crisis prevention strategies
- Recommended Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Everyone Learns Differently: Bridging the Gap Between Learning and Teaching
Dates and Times: Wednesday September 14 to September 28, from 9:30am to 12:00pm (3 Wednesday mornings)
